Your First Facial: Relaxing vs. Custom

Marjorie Lantum, M.D.
An aesthetician's prepared station

Two facials on our menu, fifteen dollars apart: the relaxing facial at $125 and the custom facial at $140, which includes dermaplane. The difference is worth understanding before you book, because it is not the one people assume.

The relaxing facial

Calm, straightforward, no added actives. Cleansing, care and time. It is not trying to do anything ambitious to your skin, and that is the point.

Book this if you want the experience — an hour of quiet — or if your skin is reactive and you would rather not introduce anything new to it, or if it is your first facial and you would like to start gently.

The custom facial

Built around your skin on the day, and includes dermaplane. Your aesthetician assesses what is in front of them and adapts accordingly.

Book this if you have something specific you would like addressed, or if your skin varies with the season, or if you want the assessment as much as the treatment.

What dermaplane is

Physical exfoliation, performed by your aesthetician. It is listed separately on our menu but is included in the custom facial rather than charged on top — which is most of why the two facials are only fifteen dollars apart.

Add-ons

A few things on our menu can be added to a facial:

  • CO2 mask, $100
  • Red light therapy, $10
  • Chemical peel, $130 — a peel is its own appointment rather than an add-on; your aesthetician will tell you which is appropriate

Your aesthetician will suggest what makes sense. You are not obliged to take any of it, and a good aesthetician will happily tell you when the answer is "nothing today".

If it is your first facial

A few honest notes:

  • You do not need to arrive with perfect skin. Genuinely. Your aesthetician has seen everything and is not judging yours.
  • Say what you are actually worried about. Even if it feels trivial. It is the most useful information you can give.
  • Mention your medications and any active skincare — retinoids in particular. It changes what is appropriate.
  • Do not book it the day before an event. Skin can be a little reactive afterwards. Leave a few days.

Beyond a single facial

Facials are maintenance rather than a one-off fix, and the people who get the most from them tend to come regularly. We are finalising a membership programme for exactly that; call us and we will tell you where it stands.

How often should you come?

More useful than any single appointment is a rhythm. Skin responds to consistency, and an aesthetician who sees you regularly learns how your skin behaves across the seasons — which is information no one-off appointment can give them.

What that rhythm looks like for you is a conversation with your aesthetician. It depends on your skin, your routine and your budget, and it is a legitimate thing to ask about directly.

Common questions

How long does a facial take?

Allow more time than the treatment itself, particularly on a first visit where there is an assessment.

Should I wear makeup to my appointment?

It makes no difference — it will be removed. Come as you are.

My skin is sensitive. Which should I book?

Say so when you book and mention it again at the appointment. The relaxing facial is the gentler starting point, and your aesthetician will adapt.

Can I have a facial if I am pregnant?

Tell your aesthetician. It changes what is appropriate, and they will advise accordingly.

I use retinoids. Does that matter?

Yes, and it is one of the most commonly forgotten disclosures. Mention it, along with any other active skincare.

Will I break out afterwards?

Skin can be a little reactive after treatment. Your aesthetician will tell you what to expect and what is normal for what you had done.

Can I book a facial before an event?

Leave a few days rather than going the day before. For anything significant, more.

Do you do peels?

Yes, $130. A peel is its own appointment rather than a facial add-on; your aesthetician will advise on which is right and on timing.
