IV Hydration Therapy: What It Actually Is

IV hydration therapy at Willow and Oak is $109–$129, with the blend selected at your visit.

What it is

Fluids, delivered intravenously, in a clinical setting, by a provider. Blends vary, and which one is appropriate for you is decided at your visit rather than chosen from a menu online.

That is the whole description. We are keeping it plain deliberately, because IV therapy is an area where the marketing has got well ahead of what anyone can responsibly claim.

What we are not going to tell you

You will find clinics making expansive claims about IV drips — immunity, energy, recovery, performance, hangovers, and a good deal else. We are not going to make those claims, because we would be writing cheques the evidence does not cover.

What we will say is that it is a medical service, delivered here by a provider under the oversight of our medical director, and that whether it is suitable for you is a clinical question.

Who it is not for

IV therapy is not appropriate for everyone. There are medical conditions and medications that make it a poor idea, and there are people for whom it is simply unnecessary.

Your provider will ask about your medical history before anything is administered. Answer fully, including supplements and over-the-counter medication — it matters, and it is not a formality.

If we tell you it is not appropriate for you, that is a clinical judgement rather than a sales decision.

What to expect at the appointment

  • A conversation about your health history and what brought you in
  • Selection of an appropriate blend, discussed with you
  • The infusion itself, sitting comfortably, for a period your provider will explain
  • Aftercare guidance, which will be brief but is worth following

Pricing

$109–$129 depending on the blend. You will know which one and what it costs before anything starts.

How long it takes

Longer than most people expect, because an infusion is not an injection. Allow enough time that you are not watching the clock — your provider will tell you how long your appointment should run when the blend is selected.

Bring something to read. It is a quiet appointment.

Common questions

Is this better than drinking water?

For an ordinary, healthy person going about an ordinary day, water is the answer, and we will say so. IV therapy is a clinical service with specific indications, not a general upgrade on hydration.

Can it cure a hangover?

We are not going to make that claim. You will see it made elsewhere; treat it with the scepticism you would apply to any health claim in an advertisement.

Do I need blood work first?

Your provider will tell you what assessment is appropriate in your case. It depends on your history and on what is being considered.

Does it hurt?

There is a cannula, so there is a brief needle. Most people find it unremarkable after that.

Can I go back to work afterwards?

Generally yes, and your provider will tell you if anything about your appointment changes that.

Who should not have this?

There are medical conditions and medications that make IV therapy inadvisable. That is precisely what the pre-treatment assessment is for, and it is why we ask about supplements and over-the-counter medication as well as prescriptions.

Can I have it alongside other treatments?

Ask. Sequencing and spacing are worth getting right, and your provider can only advise if they know the full picture.
