Historic Hendersonville: Rock Castle, Monthaven and the Cash Legacy

Hendersonville reads as a comfortable lake suburb of Nashville, which undersells how much history is inside the city limits. Three places in particular are worth your afternoon.
Historic Rock Castle
An 18th-century limestone house on 18 acres beside Old Hickory Lake. Construction began in 1784 and was completed in 1796 — which makes it older than the state of Tennessee, admitted in 1796 itself.
It was built by General Daniel Smith, a Revolutionary War officer and surveyor. The house is Federal in style and built in limestone, and the site keeps period exhibits alongside grounds that are pleasant to walk regardless of your interest in the building.
Guided tours run through most of the week. Times vary and the site also hosts private events, so check current hours with Rock Castle before you go rather than relying on anything written here.
Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center
Monthaven Mansion is an antebellum house dating from around 1860. During the Civil War it was used as a field hospital.
Since 2017 it has housed the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center, a non-profit running exhibitions, art classes and workshops for all ages. The combination — a serious arts programme inside a preserved antebellum house — is unusual for a town this size, and the exhibitions rotate, so it rewards more than one visit.
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash are buried at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. People travel a long way to visit, and it remains the thing Hendersonville is best known for outside Tennessee.
If you go, go as you would to any cemetery: quietly. It is a working burial ground and other families are visiting their own people.
Making an afternoon of it
All three are within Hendersonville and none needs a full day. Rock Castle and Monthaven pair particularly well — two very different houses, two very different eras, twenty minutes apart.
The Streets of Indian Lake, at 300 Indian Lake Blvd, is the obvious place to eat afterwards, and we have written up some local favourites elsewhere.
Why we wrote this
We are at 126 Stadium Drive and most of our patients live here. Knowing your own town properly is a small pleasure, and a surprising number of people who have lived here for years have never been inside Rock Castle.
